FAQ about Regenerative Medicine

What is regenerative medicine??
Regenerative medicine is the clinical process to repair injured tissues and organs through the use of human cells. In our treatments, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are taken from your fat, cultivated and put back in your body, repairing your damaged tissues.
What are mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)?
In the many and different kinds of cells of which our body is made up of, MSCs are young and primitive cells which function in repairing tissues and keeping them healthy. As we grow older the number of MSCs decreases gradually.
I hear that iPS and ES among stem cells are risky to use. How about MSCs?
In clinical use iPS and ES cells still face barriers regarding canceration and bioethics . Unlike iPS and ES stem cells , scientific researches show that MSCs themselves have no possibility of canceration in clinical use. The safety provided by MSCs is the reason we use them. . There is also no risk of Polycythemia; even when administering large amount of MSCs such as in the hundred millions. This is because fat cells have very few hematopoietic stem cells that differentiate into blood cells. As a source of secure cells,MSCs are the best choice in current medical technology.
How are the cells cultivated?
The first priority in our service is security. We cooperate closely with clinics equipped with CPCs (Cell Processing Center), cultivation facilities that meet GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), a requirement for manufacturers of food and medications. We also do not use cell culture liquid including animal components like fetal bovine serums to avoid BSE related problems. Your cells are treated with great care and we endeavor to eliminate any risks possible.
How many clients have been treated?
As of April 2012,We have treated around 250 clients. Most of them have recovered from condition and have improved their health.
What kind of diseases can I expect to recover from through therapy?
MSCs are known to be the most effective against nerve injury, brain-related diseases and autoimmune diseases with any inflammations. They have had certain therapeutic efficacy against large-scale diseases like Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury and infantile paralysis, ulcerative colitis, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD) among others.
In which part of the body is MSCs effective?
Thoughthere have been many studies published regarding the mechanisms of MSCs, the whole picture is not yet clear. MSCs are known to be strongly correlated to the control of fibrosis and inflammatory responses in the body. Taking advantage of this mechanism, we have found MSCs to be effective against several types of medical conditions., many of which are accompanied by inflammatory responses.
How do I pay?
Please pay the initial fee, including the first medical examination, blood test and fat collection by cash at the reception counter of the clinic where you have the first examination. The payment for cell cultivation and injections should be transferred into our bank account.
How much fat is needed?
We require about 4-10ml of fat. With such a small amount there is no risk of damage left where fat is collected.
How is fat collected?
After making a 5-10mm incision in the belly under local anesthesia, we insert a narrow cannula, a tube for collecting liquids, and get fat through it. It then takes 1-2 stitches to close up the incision. The stitches can be removed one week later if you wish, or if it is not possible to make several visits to the clinic they may also be removed when you visit for your injection. It takes several weeks for the incision to disappear.
Is there any pain felt when collecting fat?
The doctors in charge of the operation are experienced and there is little no pain felt..
May I take a bath after the operation?
Only take showers and keep the incision dry. You may take baths from one week later.
How are the cultivated cells administrated?
In many cases, the cells are administrated through an intravenous injection, after being suspended in the intravenous fluid. We may be able to customize the administration according to your needs. For example, a subcutaneous injection may be chosen for aesthetic purposes.
Isn’t it risky to inject cells through the vein?
There have been no accidents in our clinic and related facilities since we started this medical service. MSCs injected into the vein circulate thorough the body and accumulate and repair damaged areas in a very short time.
Does injecting MSCs produce any side effects?
Though it is reported that some of the clients feel their bodies warm for a while after the injection, MSCs are originally parts of your own body and injecting them basically causes no side effects.
Is there any pain when injecting MSCs?
There is no pain felt in an intravenous injection. However, in the case of a subcutaneous injection into a part of the face or local injection, there may be a little pain when you are administered an anesthetic in advance.
How much time is there between collecting fat and injecting MSCs?
Though the cultivation of MSCs varies from individual to individual; usually 2-4 weeks are required to complete the whole treatment. However, please understand that as clients and time demands increase turn around may as well, and that it may take 4-6 weeks to complete the treatment.
How many MSCs are injected?
Depending upon your needs, we are able to inject them from the tens of millions to the hundreds of millions (107,~ 108); this is roughly the same volume of a pea.
Can infected patients receive the treatment?
Yes, they can. To prevent the spread of infection to other clients’ cells, cells from infected patients are moved to affiliated clinics and receive exclusive cultivation within CPC equipped facilities.
Please understand that HIV-infected patients can only be treated once a year.
Are there any age restrictions in receiving treatment?
There is no age restriction, however, it can be hard to obtain fat from very young clients. Also, we require minors to receive the consent of their parents or guardian. As for MSCs themselves, as we grow older, the number of them in the body decreases and the quality of them deteriorates.
Must a client be their own donor?
We only use MSCs from a patient’s own cells. However, as clinical researches are developed and the safety of this therapy is established in the near future, we have possibility to use MSCs provided by the patient’s relatives.
How long can I expect the treatment to work for?
Even a single MSC injection will stay effective for quite some time, though this duration depends on the disease. As of April 2013, only four years have been spent on this treatment, but MSC injections have, for example, worked against a brain hemorrhage for more than three years in one patient. Injections for the purpose of anti-aging stay effective for anywhere from half a year to two years.
How fast do injected cells work?
There are some cases where some patients who suffer from Parkinson’s disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) improved their health on the day of the intravenous injection of MSCs. However, it usually takes three or more months to get better. Also, the treatment tends to be more effective in patients who receive treatment in the early stages of their medical condition.
How many injections do I need?
Several injections may continue and enhance the efficacy of treatment, however after an injection we recommend some time to observe effects, after which we will follow-up and plan a schedule for repeated injections. Clients who plan to receive injections again in the future may freeze and preserve some of their cultured cells in our banking service.
What are the benefits of the banking system?
If you use the banking system there is no need to collect fat tissue from your body again for any repeated injections. Also, a discounted price will be applied to the fee for injections. It normally takes 2-4 weeks for samples to thaw and to cultivate the cells. , so please contact us early if you wish to use this service.
Can I receive stem cell therapy in combination with other treatments I have done?
In most cases, you can, though it depends on the medication you take. Please ask a doctor.
